Being an Arizonan my whole life is a major source of influence in my work. The metro area of Phoenix has gone from small town suburbs to a sprawling metropolis; in the early 2000’s it doubled it’s population every three years. Development is a constantly moving machine, changing the skyline on an almost daily basis. The old city is bulldozed, paved and rebuilt into the newest fast food chain or big box store. I use the past as a tool. It is deconstructed, salvaged and rebuilt to not only point out our mistakes, but to prevent them from repeating. Their ghostly remains are still visible but the parts are re-appropriated to create a discourse; to relive, analyze and most importantly apply to how we approach the future. Looking forward, by looking back.
